Fiji to stop exporting Beach-de-mer

SUVA, 05 MAY 2017 (FBC NEWS) —-A ban on exporting beche-de-mer will be part of Fiji’s voluntary contribution to the Oceans conference next month in New York.

 Fisheries Minister Semi Koroilavesau said this after surveys conducted by experts, they found out that despite the ban introduced on Underwater Breathing Apparatus recently, it makes no difference.Koroilavesau says he was advised by local experts to take further steps in an effort to revive the marine resource.

 “Officials at my ministry have told me there is a lot of underground and background operations going on UBA and there is a lot of illegal activities that are carried out have continued to harvest beachdeemer .On Monday we had a consultation before the Oceans conference i had suggested then that maybe one of the issues that Fiji can take up to the conference is the ban on exporting beach-de-mer.”

 Koroilavesau says the issue is not a question of commercial consideration but a question of social responsibility and we need to think of our future generation….
